N.E.C. Nijmegen has appointed Edwin Linssen as the new head coach of the U21 team. The 45-year-old former professional has signed a two-year contract in Nijmegen and will start his new challenge this summer. This marks the end of Jeffrey Leiwakabessy's period as trainer of the highest youth team of the club. According to technical director Carlos Aalbers, the choice was mainly driven by the desire to give the group a new impulse. Additionally, NEC did not see any opportunities for Leiwakabessy to move within the club to a different function. This means the end of a long collaboration. Leiwakabessy is considered a true NEC man. The former defender played more than 200 games for the Nijmegeners and was active in the youth academy for years after his playing career. In the past four seasons, he was in charge of NEC U21. The trainer reacted disappointedly to the decision in an interview with De Gelderlander. According to Leiwakabessy, the announcement came unexpectedly and he had hoped for a different outcome after his long commitment to the club. Furthermore, he stated that the news came at a late moment, making it difficult for him to find a new job. With Linssen, NEC brings in a trainer with experience in both professional football and youth development. The Limburger played during his active career for VVV-Venlo, Roda JC, and De Graafschap. After his playing career, he worked as an assistant coach for Roda JC and De Graafschap, was head coach of De Treffers, and was in charge of Willem II U19 last season. Head of youth development Colin Williamson describes Linssen as a trainer who fits well with the academy's vision. He highlights not only his winning mentality but also his attention to the individual development of players. An additional special detail is that Edwin will soon be working at the same club as his younger brother Bryan Linssen. The NEC striker extended his contract earlier this year until mid-2028 and will remain active in De Goffert for many years to come. For the brothers, this means a special reunion within the same club.
