On Tuesday, July 9, N.E.C. Nijmegen hosted a special edition of the Football Memories project at the Goffertstadion. This event was specifically aimed at seniors, with participants from De Graafschap and Heracles Almelo traveling to Nijmegen to reminisce about football from the past alongside N.E.C. participants. Football Memories focuses on creating a safe and enjoyable environment for seniors, with special attention given to those with early-stage dementia.
The gathering attracted over a hundred seniors, featuring various activities. After an introduction and a World Cup quiz, participants enjoyed a catered lunch. Guide Peer led the group through the stadium, sharing stories about the rich history of N.E.C. Nijmegen. This created a special afternoon filled with encounters and joy, where participants quickly connected through their shared passion for football.
Project leader Jort Klomphaar expressed satisfaction with the event, noting how wonderful it was to see participants from different clubs reconnecting through their mutual love for football. Many memories were shared, and laughter was abundant, which is precisely what Football Memories aims to achieve. This collaboration between N.E.C., De Graafschap, and Heracles Almelo demonstrates how powerful football can be in bringing people together.
The previous edition took place in Doetinchem, where N.E.C. traveled with a full team bus to a joint Football Memories gathering. This time, the Goffertstadion served as the backdrop for this unique meeting, where seniors came together to share their love for the game. The event highlights the importance of social interaction and sharing memories, especially for seniors who may be alone.
N.E.C. Nijmegen continues to commit to the community and the well-being of seniors, and this edition of Football Memories is a wonderful example of that. The success of this gathering will undoubtedly lead to more events in the future, further strengthening the bond between the various clubs and their supporters.
