N.E.C. Nijmegen played from a 1-3-2-4-1 possession and press with man-to-man. AZ had adapted and changed their 1-4-2-3-1-formation into a 1-4-2-2, with Parrot and Daal forming the front line. AZ’s idea for long balls against Nijmegen’s classic 1-1-pressing were diagonal and deep movements against Nijmegen’s three-man defense, to bind as many defenders from Nijmegen as possible and create as much space as possible next to and in front of the last line.
